Introduction

Picture this: You have studied relentlessly for months, burning the midnight oil through chapters of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics — only to miss your NEET UG 2026 registration because of a form error or a missed deadline. It is a nightmare no aspiring doctor should face.

NEET UG — the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates — is India’s single gateway to medical education. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), it opens the door to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BSMS, BUMS, and nursing seats across the country. In 2026 alone, approximately 26 lakh students registered for the exam, making it one of the most competitive entrance tests in the world.

Yet, despite its massive scale, a surprising number of candidates stumble, not in the exam hall, but at the registration stage itself. Simple mistakes like wrong photos, mismatched details, or missed payments—will disqualify your application.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the NEET UG 2026 registration process: the full timeline, step-by-step application instructions, document and photo specifications, fee details, correction window rules, and the most common errors to avoid. Whether you are a first-time applicant or planning ahead for next year, this is your definitive reference.

What Is NEET UG and Who Conducts It?

NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate) is India’s centralised medical entrance examination, mandated by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It replaced all state-level and institution-level medical entrance tests in 2019 and is now the only route to undergraduate medical seats in government and private colleges across India.

The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education. NEET UG scores are used for admission to:

  •       MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)
  •       BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
  •       BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS (Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy)
  •       B.Sc. Nursing
  •       B.V.Sc. & A.H. (Veterinary Science)

The NEET UG 2026 registration window is now closed. If you missed it, start preparing now for NEET UG 2027. Registration typically opens in early February each year, so set a reminder well in advance.

NEET 2026 Eligibility Criteria — Are You Eligible?

Before you even open the registration portal, verify that you meet all eligibility requirements. Submitting a form you are not eligible for leads to disqualification, a painful and avoidable mistake.

Age Limit

Candidates must be at least 17 years of age as of 31 December 2026. In other words, your date of birth must be on or before 31 December 2009. There is no upper age limit for NEET UG 2026 as per current NTA guidelines.

Educational Qualification

You must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 (or an equivalent board exam) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology as core subjects, along with English. Candidates in their Class 12 final year are also eligible to apply.

Minimum Percentage Required

Category Minimum Aggregate in PCB
General (Unreserved) 50%
General – EWS / OBC-NCL 45%
SC / ST / PwD / Transgender 40%

Nationality

Indian Citizens, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Foreign Nationals are all eligible. NRI and OCI candidates must provide a valid passport as their identity proof.

Documents Required for NEET UG 2026 Registration

Getting your documents ready before you start filling the form saves time and prevents errors. Uploading unclear or incorrectly formatted documents is one of the top reasons for application rejection. Here is the complete checklist:

  •       Class 10 marksheet and certificate (for date of birth verification)
  •       Class 12 marksheet or roll number (if appearing in board exams)
  •       Aadhaar card (mandatory; NTA matches the live photo with the Aadhaar database)
  •       Scanned passport-size photograph (recent, in prescribed format)
  •       Scanned signature (on white paper, in black ink)
  •       Left-hand thumb impression (scanned, clear background)
  •       Category certificate — SC / ST / OBC-NCL / EWS (if applicable)
  •       PwBD certificate issued by a competent authority (if applicable)
  •       Citizenship certificate / valid passport (for NRI, OCI, foreign nationals)

Photo and Signature Specifications

NTA introduced live photo capture in the NEET UG 2026 application for the first time. Here is exactly what you need:

Document Format Size Key Requirement
Passport Photograph JPG / JPEG 10 KB – 200 KB White or light background, face clearly visible, no cap/goggles
Live Photo (NEW 2026) Captured via webcam/QR code Auto-captured on portal NTA matches with Aadhaar; ensure good lighting
Signature JPG / JPEG 4 KB – 30 KB Black ink on white paper; no capital letters
Left-Hand Thumb Impression JPG / JPEG 10 KB – 50 KB Blue/black ink; clear impression on white paper
Postcard-size Photograph JPG / JPEG 50 KB – 300 KB Same specifications as passport photo

📸 Pro Tip: Live Photo Capture

For the live photo, connect a webcam or scan the QR code if your device lacks a built-in camera. Ensure you are in a well-lit room with a light-coloured background. NTA will automatically verify this photo against your Aadhaar records — a mismatch may result in form rejection.

NEET 2026 Application Fee — Category-Wise Breakdown

The NEET UG 2026 application fee must be paid online. All fees are non-refundable under any circumstances, so double-check your eligibility before making the payment.

Category Application Fee

SC / ST / PwBD / Transgender ₹1,000
Candidates Outside India (NRI/Foreign Nationals) ₹9,500

Accepted payment modes: Debit Card, Credit Card, Net Banking, and UPI (including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM). All transactions are processed through SSL-encrypted secure payment gateways.

Note: Applicable processing fees and GST are charged over and above the base fee; this will be shown before you confirm the payment.

Step-by-Step NEET UG 2026 Registration Process

The entire NEET UG 2026 registration process is conducted online at neet.nta.nic.in. There is no offline option. Follow these six steps carefully; skipping or rushing through any one of them can result in a rejected application.

1. Visit the Official Website & Read the Instructions

Go to neet.nta.nic.in (or exams.nta.ac.in/NEET). Before clicking ‘Apply’, download and read the official Information Bulletin carefully. It contains all updated rules, image specifications, and eligibility details for NEET UG 2026.

2. New Registration — Create Your Login ID

Click on ‘New Registration’. Enter your full name (as per Class 10 certificate), date of birth, mobile number, and email ID. After submission, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile and email. Verify it to generate your Application Number and set a password. Save these credentials; they are your login for all future steps.

3. Log In and Fill the Application Form

Log in using your Application Number and password. The form has four sections:

(a) Personal Details — name, gender, category, nationality, Aadhaar number;

(b) Academic Details — Class 10 and 12 school details, subjects, board name, roll number;

(c) Exam Preferences — select up to 4 preferred exam cities and your choice of exam language;

(d) PwBD/NRI details if applicable.

Fill every field accurately. Mistakes in name or date of birth are common and create problems during counselling.

4. Capture Live Photo and Upload All Documents

This is the most critical step. First, capture your live photo using the webcam or QR code method on the portal. Then upload your passport-size photograph, postcard photograph, signature, and thumb impression, all strictly as per the specifications in the table above. Blurry, dark, or incorrectly formatted images are the top reason for form rejection.

5. Pay the Application Fee

Click on ‘Pay Examination Fee’. Choose your payment method (debit/credit card, net banking, or UPI). If a payment fails, wait 24 hours and check your payment status before retrying; do not make a duplicate payment. Keep the payment receipt screenshot as proof.

6. Submit the Form and Download the Confirmation Page

Review your entire application one final time before hitting ‘Submit’. Once submitted, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile and email to confirm the final submission. After entering the OTP, your Confirmation Page is generated. Download and print it; you do not need to send a hard copy to NTA, but keep it safe for future reference, including counselling.

💡 Golden Rule: Only ONE application per candidate is allowed.

Common Registration Errors to Avoid

Every year, thousands of students face avoidable issues because of small but costly errors in their NEET UG application form. Here are the most common ones and how to avoid them:

1. Incorrect Name or Date of Birth:  Always use your name exactly as it appears on your Class 10 certificate. Even a minor spelling difference can create mismatches during verification and counselling.

2. Wrong Category Selection:  If you select the wrong category (e.g., General instead of OBC-NCL), you may end up paying the wrong fee or losing reservation benefits. Once submitted, category changes are typically not permitted.

3. Poor Quality Photo or Signature: Uploading a blurry, dark, or oversized image is among the top rejection triggers. Resize images to meet specifications before uploading.

4. Skipping the Live Photo Capture: The live photo is mandatory in 2026 and is matched against Aadhaar. Do not skip this step or use a pre-taken photograph in its place.

5. Incomplete Academic Details: Many candidates skip Class 11 details or enter incorrect board information. Fill every field, even if it feels redundant.

6. Payment Failures Without Follow-Up: If your payment fails, some students panic and make multiple attempts or open duplicate accounts. Always wait 24 hours and check payment status before retrying.

7. Selecting Too Few Exam Cities: You can select up to 4 preferred exam cities; always use all four options to maximise your chances of getting a convenient centre.

8. Not Downloading the Confirmation Page: Skipping this step means you have no proof of submission. Download and save it immediately after final submission.

NEET 2026 Correction Window — What Can You Fix?

Submitted your form and noticed an error? Do not panic. NTA provides a one-time correction window after the registration deadline closes. For NEET UG 2026, the correction window was open from 12 March to 14 March 2026 on neet.nta.nic.in

How to Use the Correction Window

Log in to the NEET portal with your Application Number and password. Navigate to the ‘Application Form Correction’ link. Edit the permitted fields, re-upload corrected documents if required, and submit. An OTP will be sent to confirm changes. Download and save the updated confirmation slip.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: I missed the NEET UG 2026 registration deadline. Can I still apply?

A: No. Once the registration window closes, NTA does not accept new applications. The only exception is the correction window for already-registered candidates.

Q: What happens if my payment fails during NEET UG registration?

A: Do not attempt to resubmit immediately. Wait for 24 hours and log in to check your payment status on the portal. If the payment is still showing as failed, try a different payment method. Never create a duplicate application; contact NTA helpline at 011-40759000 if the issue persists.

Q: Is Aadhaar card mandatory for NEET UG 2026 registration?

A: Yes. Aadhaar is mandatory for NEET UG 2026. NTA uses it to verify your identity through live photo matching. If you do not have an Aadhaar, update and obtain one before the registration window opens next year.

Q: Can I change my exam city after submitting the NEET UG application form?

A: Yes, exam city preferences can be changed during the correction window. However, the final allotment of exam centres depends on availability, which is why it is always recommended to select all four city preferences during the original application.

Q: How many attempts are allowed for NEET UG?

A: As per current NTA guidelines, there is no restriction on the number of attempts for NEET UG, provided the candidate meets the age and eligibility criteria. Candidates can appear every year until they secure admission.

Q: Do NRI candidates apply through the same process?

A: Yes. NRI, OCI, and foreign national candidates apply through the same online portal at neet.nta.nic.in. There is no separate form. However, the application fee for candidates outside India is ₹9,500, and a valid passport must be provided as identity proof.

Conclusion

The NEET UG 2026 registration process may look complex on paper, but it becomes straightforward when you tackle it one step at a time. The biggest takeaway from this guide is simple: do not wait until the last day. Peak traffic on the final days consistently increases the risk of server errors, payment failures, and rushed mistakes.

The 2026 registration window (8 February to 11 March) has closed, and the exam takes place on 3 May 2026. If you have already registered, focus entirely on your preparation. If you missed this cycle, use this guide as your checklist so that next year’s registration is smooth, accurate, and stress-free.
